The Town of Dedham is looking for a highly skilled professional to work assisting the Planning Board and Town of Dedham with all aspects of municipal planning, zoning, site plan, growth management and subdivision matters as delineated by state statute, local by-laws, local subdivision rules and regulations and Town and Department policies, procedures and directives and all other related work as required.
As Town Planner, you would be accountable for directing all programs regarding municipal planning, zoning and subdivision matters within the Town of Dedham as delineated by state statute and local subdivision by-laws, rules and regulations. You would work under the general direction of the Planning Board and in strict accordance with applicable Massachusetts General Law, local subdivision rules and regulations, town policies, town by-laws and relevant state, federal and local regulations and standards.
Provides supervision and oversight for one full-time employee.
Regular schedule requires evening and possibly weekend work and the performance of duties requires work beyond normal business hours as necessary to attend and/or address frequent meetings, and possible emergencies, functions, and the like.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Planning or related field; five or more years of progressively responsible experience in municipal planning and community development or equivalent experience; Master’s degree and AIPC certified strongly preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Thorough knowledge of Massachusetts municipal laws and regulations and possible Federal applications relating to municipal planning, zoning, subdivision precepts, the environment and historic preservation. Working knowledge of computer systems and software packages, inclusive of word processing, spreadsheets, scanning, Power Point or other presentations applications, electronic distribution of documents and email. Knowledge of construction standards and techniques highly desirable.
Ability to maintain detailed and extensive records and prepare reports. Ability to work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines. Flexibility to move from operational to systems demands among numerous departments/agents. Ability to deal tactfully and appropriately with the general public, town departments, state and federal agencies and their representatives, consultants, community groups, and elected and appointed officials. Exceptional communications skills, both verbal and written. Skill in problem solving and project management.
