Search for new Town Manager is underway

Post Date: 05/20/2019 1:55 PM

The Town of Dedham is seeking an experienced municipal management professional with exceptional leadership and communication skills to serve as its next Town Manager.

Town Manager Jim Kern announced in January that he would be retiring. Kern was appointed to the position by the Board of Selectmen in September 2014. Before coming to Dedham, he held appointments in Swansea and North Attleborough. A Navy veteran, Kern worked in municipal management for 24 years.

The Board of Selectmen appointed members of a Search Committee to oversee the hiring process. The Selectmen’s choices for the Committee include some who have served on previous town manager search committees and some new faces as well. Members include:

  • Michelle Appuzio
  • Mayanne MacDonald Briggs
  • John Bethony
  • Bob Coughlin
  • Dan Driscoll
  • Keith Hampe
  • Gemma Martin
  • Kevin Preston
  • Steve Rahavy

The Town has engaged experienced municipal staffing firm Community Paradigm Associates to conduct the search for Town Manager candidates. The job description and other information is available on this website

To date, staff from Community Paradigm Associates have interviewed elected officials and department heads. They also organized two open community forums to hear from residents what the Town is looking for in a new Town Manager.

The two community forums were well attended, and people were not shy about speaking up, according to Dan Driscoll, Town Moderator and Chair of the Town Manager Search Committee.

Applications for the opening are due by May 26. The Search Committee will be meeting in June to narrow the list of candidates and will hold interviews in late June and July. Driscoll said the group hopes to have some excellent recommendations for the Selectmen by late summer.

Until a new Town Manager is appointed, long-time Assistant Town Manager Nancy Baker will serve as Acting Town Manager.

Questions about the process should be emailed to Dan Driscoll.
