The Town of Dedham seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Motor Equipment Repairperson (MER). Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Working Foreman Motor Equipment Maintenance, the MER performs skilled maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment and other power driven equipment and related work as required, including repair and testing of generators at various pumping stations.
Qualifications
- High school graduate.
- Two (2) years of training or technical school with on-the-job training in heavy equipment repair.
- Three (3) years of experience in the same or related field.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications
- Possession of current, valid Class B (Class A preferred) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements (hazardous materials endorsement desirable) issued by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
- Possession of current valid special license to operate hoisting equipment (hydraulic excavator, backhoe, front end loader, gradall, street sweeper, road grader, asphalt roller, bucket truck, small crane) (2B and 3B) issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
- Possession of current valid welding certificate issued by an accredited trade school or other recognized institution.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform mechanical and electrical repair and the overhaul of mobile or stationary equipment. Must be able to both disassemble and reassemble gasoline and diesel motors, rebuild engines, replace clutches and transmissions, tune-up motors, adjust brakes, repair electrical systems, pumps, small motors, lawn mowers and brush cutters.
- Perform welding, body work and spray painting.
- On occasion, may have to instruct operators of vehicles as to the proper care and operation of complex equipment.
- Test equipment to ensure proper operation; greases, oils, and cleans equipment; changes tires; performs other minor preventative maintenance on equipment including some servicing on the job for certain special equipment.
- Repairs, maintains, and may operate various pieces of special motor equipment and under their regular pay classification may be assigned to operate other motor equipment in support of the DPW's program of construction, reconstruction, repair, and preventative maintenance of various aspects of the Town's infrastructure and public facilities.
- Carry out the duties of a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator, Motor Equipment Repairman, Highway Maintenance Craftsman and or a Laborer which may include being assigned from time to time to operate other equipment usually operated by a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator such as leaf loaders, large snowplows, sanders, forklifts, sidewalk rollers, sewer flush trucks, and road flushers.
- Loads and unloads trucks; picks up and hauls material; plows and sands highways and sidewalks.
- Performs other duties associated with a Highway Maintenance Craftsman such as rake asphalt, mix cement, lay blocks, lay bricks, pour and finish concrete, set curbing, establish and follow lines and grades to prevent puddling.
- Perform manual labor duties.
- Maintains the readiness of the vehicle assigned including making sure that all usual and customary tools and safety equipment are readily available and secured; makes sure that all fluids, marking lights, warning lights, safety devices, brakes, tires and belts are in good working order and are properly maintained.
- Regularly assesses the condition of the vehicle assigned; keeps vehicle clean inside and out, checks all safety equipment, and reports any defects to their foreman, the Working Foreman Motor Equipment Maintenance Man, or Division Superintendents and Director of Public Works.
- Tests equipment to determine satisfactory condition following repair.
- Inspects equipment and reviews work practices, and operating procedures to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety codes and standards, and keeps work area and equipment and tools clean, neat, orderly, safe and secure.
Tools and Equipment Used
- Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work.
- Mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicle.
- Electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment.
- Personal computer, calculator, telephone, mobile or portable two-way radio or cell phone.
- Welding equipment including torches, face shields, etc.
- Torque wrenches, valve grinders, and pullers.
Physical Demands
- Work is performed under office and shop conditions, and in the field with intermittent exposure to adverse weather conditions and the periodic exposure to accidental injury sufficiently serious to result in occupational disability. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, work lying on a creeper, work by reaching overhead from a standing or lying position, smell, or be in strenuous positions. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts both indoors and in outside weather conditions.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Appropriate safety precautions must be used to protect self and other employees from any danger.
- The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
