Leave the Shows to the Pros - Fireworks are Illegal

The Dedham Fire Department and Police Department are always busy on the Fourth of July, but we know fireworks happen all summer. As we enjoy the summer season, celebrate more holidays, and host more gatherings, we want to take this time to talk about Fireworks Law here in Massachusetts and Fireworks Safety.

• All fireworks are illegal for private citizens in Massachusetts to use, sell, or transport. (MGL Chapter 148, S. 39)
• It is illegal to purchase fireworks out of state and bring them back to Massachusetts to use them.
• Only licensed pyrotechnic technicians are permitted to use fireworks in Massachusetts.
  • Check out the list of State-licensed fireworks shows in Mass this summer (updated as new shows are added)
• If found, law enforcement shall seize any and all fireworks, and fines may be issued, or criminal charges sought.

Fireworks Shows Across Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services has compiled a list of licensed fireworks shows across the state on their website and is available through our Fireworks Safety page (URL listed above). The list is updated as new shows are licensed, so be sure to bookmark the page and check back.

While fireworks give off bright lights and colors, the loud noises and vibrations can cause great distress and discomfort for local veterans who may suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Protecting our Pets and Local Wildlife from Fireworks

1. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date identification tags, and if microchipped, make sure that your contact information is current and accurate in the microchip company’s database - in case they become lost. Report any missing pets to Animal Control.
2. Ahead of festivities, leave your pet in a quiet, escape-proof, safe space, with some of the pet’s favorite toys and treats. Add some music, or a TV, to help drown out the outside noises. A room with no windows or with blinds, are best, as such can also block out any bright lights.
3. If your pet is known to be frightened by thunderstorms, past fireworks or loud noises, now is the time to talk with your veterinarian about medications to help reduce their anxiety.  If you use or plan to use a ‘Thundershirt’ or similar calming pet vest, the most effective method is to have your pet wear the vest on other occasions and/or random times, leading up to the Fourth of July holiday, so that the pet does not just associate the vest with a frightening and/or unsettling event on the horizon.
