Project Purpose and Need

The Elm Street project was identified as a prime candidate for pedestrian improvements based on crash history, proximity to local retail and commercial destinations, access to transit, and potential for everyday walking as identified in the MassDOT Pedestrian Transportation Plan. The project aims to improve safety, access, and comfort for vulnerable users within the project area.

Existing Conditions

• Elm Street is an undivided urban minor arterial, approximately 40 ft wide, in Dedham under MassDOT jurisdiction. Elm Street has three lanes for most of the project area, and widens to five lanes at the Providence Highway intersection.
• Sidewalks exist on both sides but portions are not ADA compliant, with cracked pavement, missing curb ramps, and wide driveway crossings.
• There are no bicycle facilities within the project area, though there are new on-street bike lanes on Elm Street south of the project area.

Proposed Improvements

• Reconstruct a 10 ft sidewalk on the west side of Elm Street and a 5 ft sidewalk on the east side of Elm Street.
• Remove slip lane at Providence Highway, realign crosswalks and update pedestrian signal equipment and timing.
• Proposed 10’ sidewalk can be used for safe bicycle travel and can facilitate future connections as a shared use path.
