CodeRed Alert System

Dedham Residents are alerted of Emergencies via the CodeRed Community Notifications system. This system of notification is used sparingly and may include both emergency and non-emergency notifications. Visit the CodeRed website to sign up for these notifications (via landline, mobile device, and/or email). The CodeRed System is also compatible with TDD/TTY devices.

Town Website and Email Notifications

The Town will post updates and announcements regarding storms to help provide additional information and resources to residents and business owners. If you have not yet subscribed, please visit www.dedham-ma.gov/subscribe and select "Town Management" from the list up to receive email notifications, sent directly from the Town.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has compiled the following tips to help you prepare for winter storms:

Before a Winter Storm

• Reduce outdoor activities for the whole family, including pets.
• Dress warmly and limit exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite.
• Follow recommended safety precautions when using space heaters, a fireplace, or a woodstove to heat your home. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
• Make sure emergency generators or secondary heating systems, such as fireplaces and wood stoves, are well ventilated.
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working.
• If you lose heating, move into a single room, and contact your heat utility provider. At night, cover windows and external doors with extra blankets or sheets.
• Wrap pipes to prevent them from freezing. Let a trickle of warm water run from a faucet to keep water moving through your pipes.
• If your pipes freeze, open all faucets all the way, remove any insulation, and heat the frozen pipe with a hair dryer or wrap with towels soaked in hot water. Never use an open flame to thaw pipes.
• Make an emergency winter kit for your car.
• Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, and those who may need extra help.

Immediately following a storm, residents and business owners are asked to please keep public walkways clear in accordance with Town bylaws. No snow shall be thrown or placed onto any portion of a street in town that has been plowed or cleared for safe travel. The prompt clearing of snow from public ways can help ensure the safe passage of everyone and helps to maintain clear access to adjacent properties. If you have a vehicle, please ensure the vehicle is not parked blocking a sidewalk.

Be a Snow Angel

The goal behind the Snow Angels is to serve the community while helping to keep our sidewalks and public ways safe. While residents and business owners are outside clearing the snow, they can take another look at the adjacent sidewalk or property, or check on their neighbor and lend a hand if needed.

• Clear the snow right after the storm has ended and set an example for your neighbors.
• Make sure there is clear access to adjacent properties.
• Offer to help others clear snow from their sidewalks if they need assistance.
• If you have a vehicle, make sure it is not parked blocking the sidewalk.
• If a fire hydrant is nearby, help the Fire Dept. by clearing snow around it.

Adopt A Fire Hydrant 

The Dedham Fire Department is asking friends and neighbors to help do their part and adopt a fire hydrant. Fire hydrants should be clear of snow within 3 feet on all sides and make a clear path to the fire hydrant from the street for quick and efficient access in the event of an emergency.
