The Town is run day-to-day by employees who work for the people of Dedham and make up Town departments. Each department is responsible for specific areas of Town operations and services. Every department has a director or manager, most of whom report to the Town Manager. A number of departments work in concert with elected or appointed boards and committees.

Below is a list of Town departments with short descriptions of what areas they work in and services they provide:

  • Assessors: Assesses the value of all real estate and personal property in Dedham.
  • Building & Code Enforcement: Accepts and process applications and inspections for building, wiring and gas permits and enforces the state and local building code.
  • Conservation: Assists the Conservation Commission’s efforts to conserve and enhance the Town’s natural resources by administering and enforcing state and local laws and regulations that protect wetlands and manage stormwater.
  • Council on Aging: Provides programs and assistance to residents age 60 and over.
  • Endicott EstateProtects and preserves the historic Endicott Estate and hosts community and Town events year round. 
  • EngineeringThe Town’s professional and technical resource for roads, bridges, sewers, and drainage as well as the Town’s GIS mapping system.
  • EnvironmentalWorks in coordination with the Sustainability Advisory Committee to implement environmental programs across the community.
  • Facilities & MaintenanceMaintains and oversees repairs to all municipal and school buildings, including landscaping and sidewalk snow removal.
  • FinanceCoordinates and directs all aspects of the Town's financial practices and procedures, such as accounting, treasury, collection, risk management, and financial planning, including automated data processing, information systems and procurement.
  • FireProvides fire and emergency medical services to the Town and conducts various safety inspections.
  • HealthWorks in collaboration with the Board of Health to enforce state and local health regulations and offers various health services and programs to the community.
  • Human ResourcesHires, trains, and retains employees for all departments to ensure the Town has a skilled, competent, and diverse workforce working to meet municipal goals.
  • Library: Provides services to fulfill the community’s need for personal enrichment, the power of information, and the joy of reading.
  • Parks and Recreation: Coordinates and administers recreation programs for the Town and responsible for the care, coordination and maintenance of most of the parks and fields in Town.
  • Planning & Zoning:  Works in collaboration with the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals as well as various other boards  on long-term planning for land use, open space, economic development, and transportation.
  • PoliceProvides for the safety and security of Dedham residents and businesses, protects property, and preserves the public peace.
  • Public Works (DPW)Manages construction and maintenance within public ways and on Town owned property and oversees the trash and recycling program. 
  • SchoolsThe mission of the Dedham Public Schools (DPS), in partnership with the community, is to promote excellence in learning, self-discipline, and motivation. DPS maintain their own website, which we link here for your convenience.
  • Town Clerk: Manages Town election info, the annual Town Census and related vital statistics. Administers the oath of office to all elected and appointed members of Town boards and issues business certificates, dog licenses, and more.
  • Town ManagerThe office of the Town’s chief administrative officer and Chief procurement officer, reporting to the five elected members of the Board of Selectmen.
  • Treasurer-Collector: Responsible for the collection of all billed receivables for the Town of Dedham, receives all monies which come into the Town, and pays all bills, including payroll.
  • Veterans ServicesA designated resource for veterans and/or their dependents providing assistance and information regarding assistance and benefit opportunities.
  • Youth CommissionWorks with young people in Dedham on after-school activities; opportunities for community service, jobs, and volunteering; assistance with personal problems and confidential referrals for counseling.
