What is the Waste Ban and How can I comply with it?
Waste bans are restrictions on the disposal, transfer for disposal, and contracting for disposal of certain hazardous and recyclable items. The purpose of the Waste Ban is to capture more recyclables, conserve landfill space, and keep hazardous substances out of the environment.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) enforces compliance with the waste ban and pursues enforcement against solid waste facility operators, haulers, and generators of solid waste who do not meet the requirements. MassDEP conducts inspections of solid waste facilities to identify generators that dispose of banned materials.
You can easily comply with the Waste Ban by not throwing the following Items into the trash, instead recycle them:
Glass, metal and plastic containers
Cardboard (must be broken down prior to being put out for recycling)
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL's contain mercury so they cannot be thrown into the trash. You can recycle CFLs at IKEA or Home Depot)
Asphalt pavement, brick and concrete (otherwise known as the ABC's)
Metal and wood
Tires (National Tire and Battery will take them back for a minimal charge)
White Goods (large appliances)
Electronics (can be dropped off at Staples for $10 or at the Geek Squad within Best Buy for free)
Leaf and Yard Waste (bag and leave on curb for pick-up or compost in your backyard)
With the Single Stream Recycling program residents do not need to sort paper, plastics and cardboard. These items can be combined in the recycling toter.

My trash or recyclables were not picked up – what happened?
Some possible scenarios for why your trash or recyclables were not picked up include:
It was not out by 7 am, therefore it was not picked up
The toters were less than 3 feet apart, so the arm could not reach the individual toters.
The toters were not placed on the curb with the opening of the lids facing the street.
The toter lid was not able to close because bags of trash were piled higher than the toter.
You failed to put out the toters provided by the Town. Only recycling and trash in toters provided by the Town will be picked up.
Your toters were blocked by a parked car.
Recyclables were mixed in with trash.
If your recycling or trash was not picked up, please contact Waste Management at 800-972-4545
Will bags outside of my trash toter be picked up?
No, all trash must be contained within the toters, with the lid closed.
Does all of my trash need to fit in my one trash toter?
Yes, all trash needs to fit in the toter with the lid closed. 70% of household waste is recyclable so take a closer look at what you are putting in your trash and see if you can’t move some of that into the recycling container to free up room in your trash toter. Additional trash toters are not available.
