About the Project

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has prioritized the replacement of the Bussey Street Bridge in Dedham as a result of the following observations that the newly constructed bridge will address:

ISSUE IMPROVEMENT
Deficient pedestrian accommodations
  • Accessible Pedestrian curb ramp with detectable warning panel
  • New minimum five-foot cement concrete sidewalk
  • New crosswalks for improved connectivity
No designated bicycle facilities
  • 5-foot-wide bicycle lane south of bridge
  • Improve shoulders or fog line for bicycle accommodation where feasible
  • All new pavement markings and signage
Intersection safety & capacity Issues
  • New Overhead Flashing Warning Beacon at Colburn Street intersection
Deficient Drainage and Pavement Conditions
  • Stormwater Improvements
  • Reconstruct roadway pavement by Mill &Overlay
Deficient Bridge
  • Replace Superstructure
  • Install new bridge railings

Bridge Closure and Detours

The Bussey Street Bridge over Mother Brook will be closed starting September 18, 2023, and remain closed until Spring of 2025. The bridge will be replaced during this time. The temporary detour plan is outlined below and pedestrian access will be maintained over the existing bridge during construction. Access to all properties along Bussey Street, INCLUDING CONDON PARK, will be maintained during construction while the bridge is closed.

Temporary Detour Plan:

  • High Street to Maverick Street to Colburn Street to Bussey Street
  • Sawmill Lane to Dedham Boulevard to Harding Terrace to Colburn Street to Bussey Street

Reminder: Access to all properties along Bussey Street, INCLUDING CONDON PARK, will be maintained during construction while the bridge is closed.

    • Drainage work along Bussey Street
  • Summer 2024 through Fall 2024
    • Sidewalk, water, and lighting at Bussey Street Intersection
  • Spring 2025 through Summer 2025
    • Micro-milling, Full-depth road box widening, and final paving
  • Summer 2025
    • Bridge opening

Work Hours

Typical Work Shift:

  • Monday through Friday
  • 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM each day
  • One Lane Alternating Traffic between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM

No work shall be done on this contract on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays or not be allowed the day before or the day after a long weekend which involves a Holiday without prior approval by the Engineer. Contractor may request through MassDOT to work occasional overnight work in order to minimize traffic obstruction during roadway paving operations.
