A stormwater BMP is a specifically designed structural, vegetative, or managerial practice to treat, prevent and/or reduce water pollution. Our upcoming Stormwater BMP Project includes retrofitting existing stormwater utility infrastructure to include new, underground infiltration trenches. Infiltration trenches are recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an approved BMP to remove various impairments, including Phosphorous and Nitrogen, that are collected in the rainwater as it flows over land before it enters our stormwater system.

As required by the EPA through our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit, the Town of Dedham must remove approximately 900 pounds of phosphorus over the next 15 years. Infiltration trenches are most effective at this removal and the Town estimates approximately 13 pounds of phosphorus will be removed through this effort.
